Opening a door is the easiest way to gain access into the vehicle and the patient. It is rare that we cannot open a door with our hand using the handle, but we must be prepared to use hydraulic tools if necessary, especially if the patient is unresponsive. Once we have opened the door, the amount the door can be opened is controlled by the check strap (also called weather strap). This small piece of metal can usually be found in between the door hinges and can easily be cut. Once this has been done, the door can be easily pushed back, creating a large amount of space and access to the patient.
